Updates Regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19)
We know the coronavirus (COVID-10) has created new and unexpected challenges. Your health and safety are our top priorities. Here’s how the AP Program is supporting students:
- All students can now access free, live, and on-demand AP classes and review sessions led by AP teachers on YouTube.
- For this year only, students have the option to test at home.
Please view AP Updates for Students Affected by Coronavirus (COVID-19) for all the latest information, including the daily AP online course schedule and details about the exam schedule, format, and content.
If you choose to cancel your AP Exam, there will be no fees charged by the College Board’s AP Program. However, test centers are independent from the College Board, and may choose to charge their own fees. The College Board does not provide guidance to schools or test centers regarding this issue.
All 2020 AP Exams will be taken online, on a number of devices, such as computer, tablet, or smartphone. Students will have the option to take a photo of the handwritten responses. Discuss with your test center if you need support accessing exams.
It will be up to the individual test center in India to decide if students can take the exams at the testing location. Factors to consider are the exam dates/times, whether test centers are permitted to open, whether there are local restrictions for groups to convene, etc.
Test centers may have updated their policies about testing, cancellations and refunds, due to the coronavirus. Contact your test center if you have questions about your registration or if you choose not to test.
If you have already registered for the May 2020 AP Exams:
- Review the most recent updates from AP about changes to the exams this year.
- You must remain registered with an authorized testing center in order to test. No additional registrations are accepted at this time.

2020 Testing AP Exam Schedule in India
In response to the coronavirus pandemic, AP will set a new exam schedule to support at-home testing. For each AP Exam, there will be two different testing dates. Students can choose either test date. The original regular testing schedule (May 4-15) and late testing schedule (May 20-22) are no longer applicable for 2020 exams.
You must already be registered with an authorized test center to test, though it won’t matter if you registered for regular or late testing. You will only be able to take each AP Exam once. Get this year’s exam schedule here.
Other existing testing policies still apply:
- You cannot take both Calculus AB and Calculus BC in the same year.
- You can take up to all 4 Physics exams in the same year.
- You cannot retake an exam in the same year. You may retake it in a subsequent year.
Note: Not all AP Exams are offered by test centers in India. Courses such as AP Computer Science Principles, AP Seminar, and AP Research require course enrollment at an AP school to register for the exam.
What Is AP?
The Advanced Placement® Program (AP) offers university-level courses and exams that you can take while you’re still in secondary school.
If your school currently does not offer AP courses, you can still benefit from taking AP Exams. Prepare on your own and take the exams at a local test center.
Why Take AP Exams?
To stand out to universities. AP shows that you’ve mastered university-level knowledge and skills while still in high school. Nearly all universities in the U.S., as well as many in Canada, recognize qualifying AP Exam scores of 3 or higher on a scale of 5 for credit and/or advanced placement. Many universities in 70 countries and territories throughout Europe, Asia, Middle East, and Latin America also use AP toward admissions and recognize AP as a standardized measure of academic achievement.
“[Students hear] from our graduates that AP absolutely helped facilitate their entry into highly competitive institutions and prepared them for first-year college success.” –Dr. Habegger, School Director at Colegio Nueva Granada (CNG) in Bogotá, Colombia.

- AP in U.K. Admissions:
Because of her combined AP Exam and SAT test scores at her high school in China, Miranda Zhang, now a University of Oxford student, received an unconditional offer from Oxford upon admission, which she says made her life much easier than those of A-Level students, who had to wait for their exam results in August to see if they met Oxford’s conditions or not.
Students can apply to universities in the U.K. via UCAS with their AP results. Learn how AP can help you get unconditional offers.
- AP in U.K. Admissions:
- To save money. Many universities give credit or advanced placement for qualifying AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. For example, if you get a score of 4 on the AP English Language and Composition Exam, then you may be eligible to skip your university’s English Language 101 course. The more classes you can skip with qualifying AP Exam scores, the more money you could save on tuition.
- To save time. If you can skip an introductory course by earning a qualifying AP Exam scores, then you can take another class instead that will count toward your degree. Use the time you save to take on a double major, an internship, or an on-campus job—or even graduate early.
How to Prepare for AP Exams
AP Exams are changing this year to respect the challenges students and schools are facing in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
To support distance learning, AP is offering free, live, and on-demand AP classes and review sessions led by AP teachers on YouTube. Get the course schedule and details here.
AP Exam Scores
We anticipate this year's AP Exam scores will be reported on the same schedule as in the past (typically early July). Visit the AP Scores website to view your scores.
Colleges and universities expect to receive your AP scores via an official AP Score Report sent by the AP Program. The first score report AP sends is free if you indicate a college or university on your AP student profile. You may send your score report to additional universities by ordering online. You may also withhold or cancel scores. Learn about score reporting services.
AP Exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5. A score of 3 or higher qualifies you for university credit or advanced placement and may be considered for admissions. Each college or university determines their own policies for AP toward admissions, credit, or advanced placement.
