What Is AP?

The Advanced Placement Program (AP) offers university-level courses and exams that you can take while you’re still in secondary school.

If your school currently does not offer AP courses, you can still benefit from taking AP Exams. Prepare on your own and take the exams at a local test center.

Why Take AP Exams?

  • To stand out to universities. AP shows that you’ve mastered university-level knowledge and skills while still in high school. Nearly all universities in the U.S., as well as many in Canada, recognize qualifying AP Exam scores of 3 or higher on a scale of 5 for credit and/or advanced placement. Many universities in 70 countries and territories throughout Europe, Asia, Middle East, and Latin America also use AP toward admissions and recognize AP as a standardized measure of academic achievement.

“[Students hear] from our graduates that AP absolutely helped facilitate their entry into highly competitive institutions and prepared them for first-year college success.” –Dr. Habegger, School Director at Colegio Nueva Granada (CNG) in Bogotá, Colombia.

Download a list of universities outside the U.S. that recognize AP for admissions and/or credit or advanced standing.

  • AP in U.K. Admissions:

Because of her combined AP and SAT exam scores at her high school in China, Miranda Zhang, now a University of Oxford student, received an unconditional offer from Oxford upon admission, which she says made her life much easier than those of A-Level students, who had to wait for their exam results in August to see if they met Oxford’s conditions or not.

Students can apply to universities in the U.K. via UCAS with their AP results. Learn how AP can help you get unconditional offers.

  • To save money. Many universities give credit or advanced placement for qualifying AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. For example, if you get a score of 4 on the AP English Language and Composition Exam, then you may be eligible to skip your university’s English Language 101 course. The more classes you can skip with qualifying AP Exam scores, the more money you could save on tuition.
  • To save time. If you can skip an introductory course by earning a qualifying AP Exam scores, then you can take another class instead that will count toward your degree. Use the time you save to take on a double major, an internship, or an on-campus job—or even graduate early.

How to Prepare for AP Exams

AP Exams consist of multiple-choice questions and essay questions. Most exams are two to three hours long.

AP courses prepare you for AP Exams as well as giving you skills and knowledge critical to success at university. However, you can take most AP Exams without taking the AP course as a prerequisite. Thousands of students like you prepare for AP Exams on their own every year. Use these resources to study, practice, and make sure you’re ready for exam day:

  • Visit Preparing for the Exams to get official exam questions, study tips, and other free resources.
  • Review the AP Course Description for the subject(s) you want to test in. Each description explains which topics are covered in the AP course—and what may be on the exam.
  • Visit the AP Course Ledger and enter “Online” into the Quick Search box. You’ll find authorized online AP courses you may be able to take at home. (Or search for schools in India that offer authorized AP courses.)
  • Explore the books and study resources available for purchase on the College Board store.
  • Explore AP resources available at advising centers of the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF).

AP Exam Scores

AP Exam scores are released to you and colleges and universities in July. Visit the AP Scores website to get updates, view your scores, and get help (click the “Help” link ).

The first score report is free if you indicate a college or university on an exam answer sheet. You may send your score report to additional universities by ordering online. You may also withhold or cancel scores. Learn about score reporting services.

If you took at least three AP Exams, you may be eligible for AP Scholar Awards, which recognize students who have demonstrated outstanding performance on AP Exams. These awards are calculated and added to your online score report during the summer. You will be notified by email if you’ve earned an award.

AP Exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5. A score of 3 or higher qualifies you for university credit or advanced placement and may be considered for admissions. Each college or university determines their own policies for AP toward admissions, credit, or advanced placement.
