About the SAT® and SAT Subject Tests

The SAT is the most widely used entrance exam for undergraduate study in the U.S. and is increasingly being used by universities around the world. It helps students show universities what they know and how they can apply it. Plus it tests the same knowledge and skills taught in school such as reading, writing and math.

SAT Subject Tests are hour-long, content-based tests that allow you to showcase achievement in specific subject areas where you excel. There are 20 SAT Subject Tests in five general subject areas: English, history, languages, mathematics and science.

Register for the SAT and SAT Subject Tests

For international students, it’s important to take the SAT within two years before you expect to enter college. If your chosen universities recommend or require SAT Subject Tests, you need to register separately for these. You cannot take both the SAT and SAT Subject Tests on the same test date. Please note that not all SAT Subject Tests are offered on all test dates so plan accordingly. Visit the International SAT Test Dates page to see when specific tests are offered.

Opportunities to take the SAT are available on sites in more than 175 countries and territories around around the world. Within the vast majority of these countries, you can register directly using our online registration site.

There are a few countries with unique circumstances*:

Within mainland China, the SAT is available only to students enrolled in authorized secondary schools. If you are from China and are not enrolled in a school authorized to offer the SAT, you can take the SAT at testing locations in Hong Kong or elsewhere. Register online and choose from test centers in a location most convenient for you outside of mainland China.

If you wish to take the SAT within Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria or Togo, you must register via paper registration through the College Board’s regional representatives. Unfortunately, online registration is not yet available for SAT testing in these particular countries within the Gulf of Guinea. Note that registration through College Board’s regional representatives is subject to an earlier deadline.

Visit the International SAT Test Dates page for more information.
